HTC unveils the HTC Desire 816 and 610 at MWC 2014

Today at the World Mobile Congress, HTC has announced some new handsets to join the popular HTC One series, namely the HTC Desire 816 and 610 which are squarely aimed at the mid-range market. The HTC Desire brand has a strong following amongst Android fans and HTC are hoping to build upon it with the Desire 816 and the 610 model.┬áThis shift in direction is a welcome move as previously HTC had only focused on the top end of the market and neglected a very large marketshare for those who can’t quite afford their flagship HTC One smartphone.

HTC Desire 816

Kicking off with the higher specification of the two, the Desire 816 is shaping up to be a very attractive mid-range phone that is styled after its big brother, including the stereo front speakers.. Featuring a large 5.5″ screen with a 720p resolution, it is more than adequate to consume media on, while the 1.6GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 CPU will keep things ticking along. Running the latest Android it will also feature HTC Sense 5.5 so you will also get the extra features such as Blinkfeed. The 13MP rear camera will be appreciated over the standard 8MP and having a 5MP front camera should help enhance those “selfies” that are becoming ever more popular.

HTC Desire 610

The HTC Desire 610 is the smaller, cheaper version between the new models, however it should still give reasonable performance. The screen is a more comfortable 4.7″ size with a quarter HD resolution (960 x 540 pixels) which is powered by a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 CPU. with slightly less RAM than its bigger brother it should still produce good performance as long as HTC doesn’t not add too much bloat to the system.

eMagi’s Take
In all this is a smart and much needed move by HTC to target the mid-range audience as it is a growing sector in the market. With a better quality range of selection from the mid to the top end, HTC should see a return to profit in 2014, only if their handsets are competitively priced. My only concern is that with the Sense UI, it could prove to be too sluggish for the specifications so I really hope HTC have managed to optimise as much as it can prior to its release.
