Hello Kitty turns 40, collaborates with Japanese boyband SMAP

This year the loveable mascot Hello Kitty turns 40! To celebrate, Sanrio has announced collaborative merchandise at their Sanrio Expo 2014 which took place on 7th February. While the Hello Kitty brand is often aimed at the younger audience, Sanrio has tried to branch out to their older demo graph by teaming up with Japanese boy-band SMAP for their latest album.

The suits were also on display at the Sanrio Expo 2014 event along with other fashion creations by Pink House and Wapper, accessories by Colette, custom made glassware by Fire-King and even jewellery by Mikimoto and Chan Luu to ensure that Hello Kitty has a special birthday indeed.

SMAP themselves have kept themselves busy ever since bursting into the Japanese music scene way back in 1988 as they currently host the popular variety show SMAP x SMAP, featuring many large  celebrities through the years such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Michael Jackson, Hikaru Utada, David Beckham, Tom Cruise, Backstreet Boys, Madonna, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Brad Pitt, and Lady Gaga just to name a few.

We at eMagi will be sure to write more about the popular or more obscure Hello Kitty merchandise out there to help celebrate the popular mascot’s 40th birthday, so stay tuned!
